Design Approach & Process
I worked on the PlayStation Portal Remote Player, a zero-to-one handheld designed to bring the PS5 experience into a dedicated remote play device. As part of a small, cross-functional team, I led visual design and contributed heavily to interaction design across the core experience. The product launched successfully and has sold over 2 million units, becoming one of the top-performing PS5 accessories. From early concept stages, I helped shape the overall experience with a focus on clarity and ease of use—translating ideas into wireframes and prototypes, and iterating closely with engineering and product to refine both the experience and feasibility.
A key focus of the work was making Remote Play feel simple and reliable. I designed flows that reduced friction when starting and managing sessions, and built a feedback system that clearly communicates things like connection quality and latency. I also worked through edge cases—especially around unstable network conditions—to ensure the experience still felt predictable. On the visual side, I adapted PlayStation’s design language to a handheld form factor, refining layout, typography, and component behavior, and contributing to reusable patterns that kept the UI consistent as the product evolved.
Alongside the shipped experience, I explored early concepts around how the platform could evolve toward cloud game streaming. Working closely with the lead designer, I helped define how existing systems—like home, library, and connection flows—could adapt to support more flexible, streaming-based experiences. These explorations helped inform early thinking around the future direction of the device, extending the current model rather than replacing it.
