Overview

I led UI design for the Call of Duty Companion App, built from scratch for iOS and Android and launched in November 2018. My work continued through 2022 across Home, Social, Ops, Intel, and Player.

Context

The challenge

The problem

The app combined detailed player stats with friends, news, and squad competitions. Each needed a clear place on a phone screen.

The goal

Help players quickly check how they played, see who’s online, and track squad progress between games.

Constraints

Each supported Call of Duty game had its own modes, stats, and content. Shared patterns had to handle those differences and stay consistent across iOS and Android.

Home

Home at a glance

Home brought together recent match results, friends online, activity, and squad progress, with links to Player, Social, and Ops.

01

Recent Match Performance

A summary of the latest match, with a link to full stats in Player.

02

Playing Now

Friends online, with a shortcut to the friends list in Social.

03

Feed

Friends’ recent matches and achievements, with a link to the full activity feed.

04

Ops

Squad rank, progress, and time remaining in the weekly tournament.

Building the app

We brought player stats, friends, squad competitions, and news into one app. I led UI across the app, including Ops and Social, with shared navigation and components that supported new features over time.

Ops: squads and tournaments

OPS

Players could create or join a squad, track weekly tournament progress, and check rankings, rewards, and past results.

Swipe for more screens

Player: stats and progression

Player brought together Combat Record, match details, loadouts, Battle Pass, and the store.

Four views of daily performance

Players could switch between K/D ratio, win rate, accuracy, and average score. Selecting a day brought up the figures behind each chart.

K/D ratio
Win rate
Accuracy
Average score

Social: friends and activity

Players could see who was online, catch up on friends’ achievements, and compare stats through the feed, friends list, and profiles.

Intel: news and league coverage

Intel combined news, guides, heat maps, and Call of Duty League coverage. Fans could watch matches, check schedules, and track viewing rewards.

Shared typography, colors, icons, and components gave the app a consistent foundation and supported new screens as it grew.

Outcome

Launch and results

During 2019, app ratings rose from roughly 2 stars to 4.8 on iOS and 4.1 on Android, reflecting the team’s combined design, feature, and engineering work.

8.2M+ downloads.

Launched in November 2018 on iOS and Android, connecting players to their stats, friends, and squads between games.
